Community Revitalization

The most effective revitalization initiatives are comprehensive approaches that:
  • Use layered strategies to achieve impact on multiple fronts.
  • Are tailored to unique, local conditions.
  • Incorporate meaningful resident engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

Before beginning a comprehensive revitalization effort, it’s important to do the preliminary work necessary for success. This includes choosing and understanding your target area , engaging residents and other stakeholders, and devising a plan.


Once you have identified the needs and priorities of your community through a community-planning process with resident input, the next step is to develop strategies that respond to those needs and priorities.

Think in terms of strategies focused on place (such as housing and physical revitalization), people (such as financial stability and health) and community systems (such as economic development).   

When selecting your strategies, it is helpful to think about the “sweet spot” between what the community needs, what you and your partners have the capacity to achieve, and what you have the financial resources to accomplish.

Common revitalization strategies include any or all of the below:

Comprehensive revitalization efforts require close attention both to the work itself and to the conditions both within and outside your organization that will influence the success of your endeavors. Both in the planning stages and throughout implementation, you need ensure that you secure the necessary support from your organization’s leadership and staff and from local residents, stakeholders, policymakers and funders to further your objectives.
