Our network organizations show love for their communities every day, but some also use Valentine's Day to make life sweeter for their residents. January is Poverty Awareness Month. According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.5 percent of Americans live in poverty, including one in every five children. For many families, an illness, death or loss of a job can result in a sudden plunge into poverty. Many members of the NeighborWorks network are implementing innovative initiatives to help alleviate poverty in their communities.

Keeping your home safe from bad weather
Staying warm this winter is going to cost homeowners and renters more. According to the U.S. Energy Department, the cost for all four main heating fuels—natural gas, electricity, heating oil, and propane—will increase. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts this winter will be much frostier than last season with the biggest cold blasts occurring in southern states.
